Urban Sketching: Capturing the Energy of the City

In this brand new course, students will dive into the dynamic and expressive world of urban sketching. This exciting practice is all about observing everyday life and quickly capturing the character, movement, and personality of a place.

Throughout the session, students will work from photographs, reference drawings, and on location sketching excursions in Old Colorado City. From historic storefronts and street scenes to architectural details and passing figures, we’ll explore how to simplify complex environments and translate them into confident, lively sketches.

A variety of mediums will be introduced, including pen and ink, watercolor, pencil, and mixed media. Students will experiment with loose line work, quick value studies, limited color palettes, and compositional exercises designed to help them sketch more freely and intuitively. The focus will be on observation, spontaneity, and learning how to capture atmosphere rather than perfection.

Urban sketching encourages artists to see their surroundings differently. It builds confidence, sharpens drawing skills, and teaches you how to tell visual stories through place. Whether you’re new to sketching or looking to loosen up your style, this class offers a fresh and energizing way to engage with the beauty and excitement of the city around you.

All levels and all mediums are welcome. Whether you work in paint, drawing materials, or mixed media, this class offers a supportive environment for artists who want to push their skills, study historical influence, and create work inspired by the greats.

Students are required to bring their own supplies.

Plus, you can join at any time - late starts are prorated, so you won’t miss a beat. Come and unleash your creativity in a fun, supportive environment!
