Painting on Black Canvases: Light From the Dark
Step outside the traditional white canvas and discover the bold, dramatic world of painting on black.
In this newly requested course, students will explore the unique techniques needed to create successful paintings on black canvases. Working on a dark surface changes everything — color behaves differently, highlights become more powerful, and contrast takes center stage. You’ll learn how to build light, create depth, and make colors glow against a rich black background.
Throughout the session, we’ll experiment with a variety of subjects including still lifes, landscapes, and more. Each week will feature a new assignment designed to strengthen your skills in drawing, layering, blending, and composition specifically for dark surfaces.
We’ll also look at contemporary artists who use this striking style, drawing inspiration from the way they use contrast, negative space, and bold highlights to create eye catching work.
Students are required to bring their own supplies.
Plus, you can join at any time - late starts are prorated, so you won’t miss a beat. Come and unleash your creativity in a fun, supportive environment!
