Mexican Retablos: Sacred Stories in Paint and Tin
In this vibrant and meaningful course, students will explore the beautiful tradition of Mexican retablos. Retablos are small, devotional paintings traditionally created to honor saints and express gratitude for miracles. Often painted on tin and adorned with decorative metal milagros, flowers, symbols, and heartfelt inscriptions, these works were displayed in churches and home altars as deeply personal expressions of faith, memory, and storytelling.
Throughout the class, students will learn about the cultural and historical roots of retablos, including their origins in colonial Mexico and their role in everyday spiritual life. We will study traditional compositions, symbolism, and color choices, while also learning practical techniques for painting on metal surfaces and creating decorative details.
Students will design and create their own retablo inspired artwork. While traditional saints are welcome subjects, students are encouraged to personalize their piece. You may choose to honor a loved one, celebrate a meaningful figure, or create an icon of a musician, artist, or historical figure who inspires you. The spirit of the retablo is storytelling and devotion, and that devotion can take many forms.
This class blends history, symbolism, and hands on technique into a deeply personal creative experience. By the end, students will leave with a unique, ornate artwork that carries both cultural tradition and individual meaning.
