Ink & Wash: Exploring Watercolor & Pen Mediums


Instructor: Erin Gillespie


Discover the magic of combining fluid watercolor with the precision of line work! In this exciting 8-week series taught by renowned artist Erin Gillespie, students will learn how to beautifully blend watercolors with a variety of versatile ink mediums.


Each week features dynamic assignments designed to build your skills while keeping you inspired. While students are encouraged to work within a small watercolor or mixed-media notebook to create a beautiful personal art journal, you are welcome to use any paper size you prefer. Through weekly prompts, you will experiment with diverse styles and discover how ink can bring structure, contrast, and personality to vibrant watercolor washes.


Whether you want to master a new technique or simply unwind creatively, this class offers a fun, supportive environment to unleash your inner artist.


✒️ This Term’s Projects & Medium Focuses:

  • Weeks 1 & 2: Food Items & Still Lifes – Illustrating vibrant colors and textures using Micron fine-liners for precise detailing.

  • Weeks 3 & 4: Animals & Nature – Capturing fur, feathers, and organic movement with Sharpies and bold, graphic contrast.

  • Weeks 5 & 6: Atmospheric Landscapes – Learning how to ground fluid skies and fields using traditional calligraphy nibs and India ink.

  • Weeks 7 & 8: Portraits & Architecture – Mastering fine facial features and complex urban textures while learning water-soluble vs. waterproof ink techniques.


📋 Class Information:

  • Ages: Adult (18+)

  • Skill Level: All levels welcome! (Perfect for both beginners and seasoned creators).

  • Mediums: Watercolor paired with various ink pens, markers, and drawing tools.

  • Supplies: Students are required to bring their own choice of painting, drawing, and ink supplies (along with a mixed-media or watercolor notebook).

  • Class Size: Minimum 6 students, Maximum 16 students.
