Working on a dark surface changes everything — color behaves differently, highlights become more powerful, and contrast takes center stage. Retablos are small, devotional paintings traditionally created to honor saints and express gratitude for miracles. In this challenging and popular class, students will study the work of a rotating selection of lesser known master artists and create original pieces inspired by each artist’s unique style. Through close visual study and discussion, we will explore what defines each master’s approach, including their use of composition, color, technique, and subject matter.
